"the study of present-day organisms and the discovery of new organisms have increased our understanding of past organisms and their environments"
Description and Classification of Organism
Thermophiles are an example of an extremophile. Thermophiles are able to survive and reproduce in environments that experience temperatures from 50 to 120 degrees Celsius. There is evidence which suggests that thermophiles have inhabited the earth for billions of years and that they were one of the first cells to come into existence because they exist in locations which have many of the requirements for the creation of life that at this time on earth were not present in many locations.
Classification- Thermophiles are classified as procaryotes, specifically archaea exremophiles. An example of a thermophile includes Pyrococcus furiosus which is scientifically classified as: Domain: Archaea Kingdom: Euryarchaeota Phylum: Euryarchaeota Class: Thermococci Order: Thermococcales Family: Thermococcaceae Genus: Pyrococcus Species: P. furiosus |
