Revision of Biological classification system
As a result of the development of microscopy over the past two centuries our knowledge of organisms inhabiting earth has increased drastically. Cell biology has revealed major difference between procaryotes and eucaryotes, bacterial classification is changing as new discoveries are made about differences in ribosomal DNA between groups within the group bacteria that suggest they should be classified as something else.
The discovery (1977) of two important groups within Monera (referred to as Archaea and Eubacteria) by Woese was based on molecular difference rather that the traditional structural differences. scince the two majorevolutionary groups have been recognised among the procaryotes they have been named Archaea and Bacteria. The relationship between the major groups is still shrouded in mystery this is reflected in the near continually changing classification, including the recent recognition of the two super kingdoms and the growth in the number of kingdoms. |
